Mehmet Akkuş, Co-Mayor of Ağrı, passes away

Mehmet Akkuş, the co-mayor of Ağrı Municipality representing the DEM Party, has passed away at the age of 57 following a period of cancer treatment at Ağrı Training and Research Hospital.

A funeral ceremony was held in front of the Ağrı Municipality, attended by family, political colleagues, local officials, and citizens. The event saw significant participation from neighboring regions, including political representatives and municipal leaders from Van and Iğdır.

DEM Party Co-Chairs Tülay Hatimoğulları and Tuncer Bakırhan issued statements honoring Akkuş as a dedicated servant of the people and a figure in the struggle for democracy and freedom. Akkuş, who was born in 1969, had a long political history, previously serving in leadership roles for DEHAP and HDP before being elected as co-mayor in the 2024 local elections.
