Global food security crisis: 645 million face hunger as 1 billion tons are wasted
On the occasion of World Food Day, global organizations and experts have highlighted a deepening crisis in food security and waste. Data from the UN and FAO indicate that one in three food items produced globally is wasted, amounting to over 1 billion tons annually. In Turkey, food waste is estimated at approximately 18 million tons per year.
Reports show that approximately 645 million people face hunger, while 2.1 billion people lack regular access to adequate and reliable food. Furthermore, significant portions of the population lack the necessary budget to afford healthy nutrition. Experts emphasize that hunger is increasingly driven by geopolitical conflicts, economic inequality, and climate disasters rather than a lack of production.
To address these challenges, calls have been made for the development of sustainable food systems through scientific innovation and technological advancement. The theme for World Food Day 2026, ‘Innovate Today, Feed Tomorrow’, underscores the need for digital transformation and improved agricultural practices. Additionally, food safety advocates stress the importance of continuous, risk-based inspection systems throughout the entire supply chain—from production and import to storage and consumption—to protect public health.
