Mehmet Kömürcü establishes registered honey brand in Cappadocia
Mehmet Kömürcü, a 62-year-old employee of the Provincial Health Directorate, has transformed a childhood hobby into a registered honey brand in Nevşehir, Turkey. Operating near Hodul Mountain in the Ürgüp district, Kömürcü has expanded his production to 136 beehives.
The honey, registered under the name "Cappadocia Hodul Honey," derives its quality from the region's rich biodiversity, which includes 1,460 flower varieties, 104 of which are endemic. Kömürcü noted that while his recent harvest of approximately 600 kilograms was lower than expected, the lack of additives and sugar maintains its high quality.
His products are increasingly sought after in major Turkish cities like Istanbul and Ankara, and are also exported by expatriates to Germany, the United Kingdom, and France. Kömürcü plans to expand his operations significantly upon retirement, with a goal of reaching 500 to 600 hives.
