Mehmood: The journey of a legendary Hindi cinema comedian

On his birth anniversary, the life of legendary Hindi cinema comedian Mehmood is being commemorated. Born in Mumbai on September 29, 1932, Mehmood overcame significant childhood financial hardships, including selling toffees on local trains between Malad and Virar to support his family.

His film career began in 1943 at Bombay Talkies, where he played the childhood role of actor Ashok Kumar in the film ‘Kismat’. He later became a dominant force in comedy through iconic films such as ‘Bhoot Bangla’, ‘Padosan’, ‘Bombay to Goa’, ‘Gumnaam’, and ‘Kunwara Baap’.

A notable moment in his career involved his relationship with singer and actor Kishore Kumar. After an early interaction where Kishore Kumar jokingly expressed concern that Mehmood might one day become a professional challenge to him, Mehmood fulfilled his promise to work with the legend by casting him in his own production, ‘Padosan’, which became a landmark comedy in Indian cinema.
