MEI Faenza celebrates 30 years of independent music
The Meeting delle Etichette Indipendenti (MEI) returns to Faenza from October 1 to 4, celebrating its 30th anniversary. The event features a diverse lineup of artists, including Motta, Cisco, and Lamante, and serves as a central hub for the independent music supply chain.
Giordano Sangiorgi, the coordinator of MEI, highlighted the evolving challenges facing independent artists. He noted that while digital platforms have democratized music access, they have also created a digital monopoly. Sangiorgi specifically pointed to Spotify, suggesting that its algorithms and sponsored content tend to favor mainstream commercial music, making it difficult for independent creators—particularly female singer-songwriters—to achieve economic sustainability.
Adding to the event's programming, the artist Izine will perform at the MEI in Faenza on October 4. His project, ‘Musica Sostenibile’ (Sustainable Music), focuses on themes of ecology, environmentalism, and the impact of artificial intelligence on modern life.
