Mečiar claims Václav Havel considered using military against Slovaks
Former Slovak Prime Minister Vladimír Mečiar has claimed that former Czechoslovak President Václav Havel considered deploying the military to prevent Slovakia from unilaterally seceding from Czechoslovakia.
In a recent interview, Mečiar alleged that Havel was prepared to use force to maintain the integrity of the federation. These claims have been met with strong denials from various political figures and historians. Former Czech President Václav Klaus stated he had never heard of such plans, while former Havel advisor Alexandr Vondra characterized the remarks as a “typical lie.”
Historian Ján Rychlík dismissed the claims as nonsense, stating that Havel would never have used the military and that such a decision was not within his competence. Former Slovak Prime Minister Ján Čarnogurský also rejected the allegations, noting that the conditions for a violent escalation involving the military were never present during the dissolution of the republic.
