Međimurje County declares natural disaster due to drought

Međimurje County Prefect Matija Posavec has declared a state of natural disaster due to drought affecting three cities—Čakovec, Mursko Središće, and Prelog—and 19 municipalities.

The summer of 2026 was characterized by above-average, extreme temperatures and prolonged periods without precipitation. Temperatures exceeding 30°C were recorded as early as June, with multiple instances reaching between 35°C and 37°C. This lack of moisture has caused significant damage to agricultural land, with estimated losses ranging from 30% to over 80%.

The most severe damage has been observed in vegetable and field crops, forage plants, and orchards. Authorities have called upon individuals and legal entities to report damages to their respective municipal commissions, specifically for property not covered by drought insurance. Municipal commissions must report final assessments to the county commission via the Damage Register within 50 days of the declaration.
