Balkan nations expand traffic enforcement via new radar technology

Authorities in Croatia, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina are implementing stricter traffic enforcement measures through new technology and increased patrols.

In Croatia, the Ministry of the Interior has launched a tender for 40 advanced fixed radar units and 120 housings, valued at approximately 2.725 million euros. These new systems will monitor at least three lanes simultaneously, detecting not only speeding but also illegal overtaking and driving in the wrong direction. The technology includes automated license plate recognition (ANPR) capable of identifying vehicles from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and other non-EU countries.

Montenegro is expanding its automated radar control to all cities. The Police Directorate currently utilizes 23 devices and plans to acquire 12 more to reach a total of 35. Officials noted that approximately 50 drivers in Podgorica have already been sanctioned under the new system.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, police in Prijedor have begun seizing vehicles from repeat offenders involved in serious traffic violations, such as driving without registration or under the influence of drugs. Additionally, scheduled speed controls are being conducted across various municipalities in Central Bosnia to improve road safety.
