Međimurje Prefect honors 34th Engineering Battalion veterans

Međimurje County Prefect Matija Posavec met with representatives of the 34th Engineering Battalion Veterans' Association ahead of the 35th anniversary of the unit's formation.

Established on September 23, 1991, in Čakovec following the liberation of the local barracks, the 34th Engineering Battalion was the first independent engineering unit formed during the Croatian War of Independence. Approximately 2,000 defenders, primarily from the Međimurje region, served in the unit. The battalion provided critical support to other Croatian Army units across various battlefields and played a significant role in major operations, including Operation Flash (VRO Bljesak).

Beyond active combat, members of the battalion contributed to mine clearance and the reconstruction of war-torn areas to improve safety in liberated territories. Posavec emphasized that the unit is a vital part of both Međimurje's history and the history of the Croatian military.
