Mein Schiff 3 collision in Bremerhaven leads to investigations

The cruise ship Mein Schiff 3 collided with two container ships while departing the port of Bremerhaven on Sunday, October 25, after being caught by a strong wind gust. The incident resulted in seven-figure damages to the vessels, including damage to the cruise ship's hull and lifeboats, and a significant tear in the hull of the larger container ship, the MSC Victorine.

No injuries were reported among the 2,428 passengers and 922 crew members on board. However, the ship's planned multi-week voyage to the Canary Islands was canceled, and passengers are being issued refunds. TUI Cruises has announced that the vessel is expected to move to the Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven for repairs around November 1.

Water police are investigating Captain Jan F. Schubert for potential negligence and breach of duty of care. While the Bremerhaven Port Authority noted that no specific wind warnings were in place at the time of departure, the Federal Bureau for Maritime Accident Investigation has also launched an inquiry. The investigation aims to determine the exact circumstances and prevent future occurrences.
