Meirilany Silva da Silva, pregnant suspect, detained in Manaus after police investigator's death

Twenty‑one‑year‑old Meirilany Silva da Silva surrendered to the 19th Integrated Police District in Manaus on 27 March and was placed in preventive detention after the Amazonas State Court revoked an earlier house‑arrest order granted because she was pregnant. She will appear before a custody hearing before being transferred to the Women's Provisional Detention Center.

Meirilany had been arrested in a drug‑trafficking operation that ended with the killing of Polícia Civil investigator Luciano Carvalho de Sena. The Public Ministry appealed the house‑arrest, arguing that the seriousness of the case – involving a criminal association that handled nearly a ton of marijuana and more than 10 kg of cocaine – justified pre‑trial incarceration. Judge Flávio Humberto Pascarelli Lopes ordered the reinstatement of preventive detention, citing the violent and grave nature of the alleged crimes. To date, five people, including a military police officer, have been detained in connection with the gang.

The case underscores the authorities’ crackdown on organized drug trafficking in the Brazilian state of Amazonas and the legal limits on granting leniency to suspects accused of serious violent offenses.
