MEIS museum celebrates European Day of Jewish Culture in Ferrara

To celebrate the European Day of Jewish Culture, the Museum of Immaterial Jewish Cultures (MEIS) in Ferrara is hosting a special program on Sunday, September 6. The museum will offer free admission and guided tours focused on themes of love and historical connections.

A highlight of the event is the first-time exhibition of a portrait of Amedeo Modigliani painted by Matilde Levi Viterbo. Levi Viterbo, an Italian Jewish painter and wartime nurse, was related to Modigliani; the portrait captures the artist during his student years at the Academy. The exhibition also features works by her son, sculptor Dario Viterbo, illustrating the integration of Italian Jews into national culture and the subsequent impact of racial laws.

The program includes a documentary screening titled ‘Outsider. Freud,’ which explores the life of Sigmund Freud, his relationship with Judaism, and his experiences with rising antisemitism in early 20th-century Vienna.
