Mekong Delta GoRice project launched to reduce carbon emissions
The GoRice project, titled “Enhancing Sustainable and Climate-Resilient Low-Emission Rice Value Chains,” was launched in Can Tho City on October 28. Funded by Global Affairs Canada, the initiative will run from 2025 to 2030 across Can Tho, An Giang, and Vinh Long provinces.
The project aims to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 748,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent and implement high-quality, low-emission farming practices across 180,000 hectares. It is expected to directly benefit 48,200 people, with a focus on supporting women and ethnic minorities.
Implemented by Oxfam in partnership with the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and the Institute for Agricultural Environment, the project will combine Canadian expertise in climate-smart agriculture, carbon accounting, and agri-tech with Vietnamese local knowledge. This effort supports Vietnam’s national goal of developing one million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice to enhance competitiveness and climate resilience in the Mekong Delta.
