Mekong River flooding and bridge collapse reported in Thailand

Heavy rainfall in Northeast Thailand and central Laos has triggered flood warnings along the Mekong River. The Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) predicts water levels will rise by 0.5 to 1.5 meters between August 11 and 15, 2026, affecting areas from Chiang Khan in Loei province to Khong Chiam in Ubon Ratchathani.

Increased water levels are being driven by heavy monsoon rains in Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar, alongside high discharge rates from the Xayaburi Dam in Laos. Authorities have advised residents in eight riverside provinces to prepare for potential overflows and to exercise caution during water activities. The ONWR is coordinating with the Mekong River Commission to monitor dam discharge plans and inflow data.

In Mae Hong Son, continuous heavy rains have caused the Mae Sa Nga River to swell, resulting in the further collapse of the Su Tong Pe Bridge. The gap in the bridge has extended to 12 meters, cutting off access between Wat Phu Samanaram and Kung Mai Sak village. Local authorities have prohibited pedestrians and tourists from approaching the damaged structure due to the risk of falling into the strong currents.
