Mel Gibson announces “The Resurrection of Christ” and 4K remaster of “The Passion of the Christ”

Director Mel Gibson has announced the upcoming release of “The Resurrection of Christ – Part One,” a sequel to his 2004 film “The Passion of the Christ.” The new production is scheduled to premiere in theaters on May 6, 2027. Gibson released a video message calling on churches worldwide to pray for the film's release, noting that filming took place in Italy.

In addition to the sequel announcement, a 4K remastered version of “The Passion of the Christ” is set to return to theaters on December 10, 2026. This updated version, developed from the original negative, features enhanced visual details and a new color correction supervised by cinematographer Caleb Deschanel. The remaster also includes a Dolby Atmos sound mix approved by Gibson to provide a more immersive experience.
