Mel Gibson announces two-part ‘Passion of the Christ’ sequel
Mel Gibson is expanding his follow-up to the 2004 film ‘The Passion of the Christ’ into a two-part cinematic project titled ‘The Resurrection of the Christ’. The films are scheduled to cover the period between the resurrection and the ascension of Jesus.
Production began in October 2025 at Cinecittà Studios in Rome, with both films being shot back-to-back. The first installment, ‘The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One’, is slated for release on March 26, 2027, followed by ‘Part Two’ on May 25, 2028. Gibson is serving as both director and producer, with Randall Wallace contributing to the screenplay.
Significant casting changes have been made for the new series. Jaakko Ohtonen will take over the role of Jesus, replacing Jim Caviezel, and Mariela Garriga will portray Mary Magdalene. These changes were implemented to avoid the complexities and costs associated with digital de-aging of the original cast.
