Mel Gibson reveals details for ‘The Resurrection of Christ’ sequel

Director Mel Gibson has shared new details regarding his upcoming film project, ‘The Resurrection of Christ’, a sequel to ‘The Passion of the Christ’. The project is being produced in two parts, both of which have completed filming at Cinecittà Studios in Italy using a continuous shooting strategy.

Unlike the previous film, which utilized Aramaic, Latin, and Hebrew, this new production was filmed in English. The narrative is expected to expand beyond earthly events to explore metaphysical realms, including depictions of the fall of angels and the three days of Christ in hell. Gibson described the cinematic experience as a “trip acide” (acid trip) intended to provide a broad, cosmic perspective on the resurrection.

Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen will take over the role of Jesus, replacing Jim Caviezel. The budget for the new production is estimated to be triple that of the original film. Part one is scheduled for release on May 6, 2027, followed by the second part on May 25, 2028.
