Mel Gibson reveals details for ‘The Resurrection of the Christ’ sequel
Director Mel Gibson has shared new details regarding the upcoming biblical drama, ‘The Resurrection of the Christ’. The project, which serves as a sequel to the 2004 film ‘The Passion of the Christ’, will be released in two parts: Part One is scheduled for May 6, 2027, and Part Two for May 25, 2028.
Unlike its predecessor, which was filmed in Aramaic, this sequel will be shot entirely in English. Gibson explained that the decision was made to ensure the complex theological information is easily understood by audiences without the barrier of subtitles. The screenplay, co-written by Randall Wallace and Donal Gibson, was developed over nearly a decade following 20 years of research.
The films will utilize a non-linear storytelling approach and significant visual effects to depict the resurrection of Jesus. Gibson noted that the story naturally split into two distinct parts during the writing process. The cast features Jaakko Ohtonen as Jesus, replacing Jim Caviezel, alongside Mariela Garriga as Mary Magdalene, and other actors including Kasia Smutniak and Rupert Everett.
