Mel Gibson's 'Passion of the Christ' to Return to US Theaters in September

Lionsgate and Fathom Entertainment announced a nationwide re‑release of Mel Gibson’s 2004 biblical drama *The Passion of the Christ* from September 10 to 17. The film has been remastered in 4K from the original camera negatives and will play in US theaters ahead of Gibson’s planned sequel, *The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One*, slated for a May 6, 2027 debut.

The re‑release highlights the film’s status as the highest‑grossing Christian and independent movie ever. Kevin Grayson, president of worldwide distribution for Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said, “Bringing it back to theatres in a stunning new restoration allows longtime audiences to experience it in an entirely new way while inviting a new generation to discover it in theatres for the very first time.” The upcoming sequel, executive produced by Cedar Hill and Mike Ilitch Jr. Productions, will again star Jim Caviezel as Jesus and is described by Gibson as “very ambitious.” Gibson discussed the sequel’s development on *The Joe Rogan Experience*, noting a multi‑year writing effort with his brother and screenwriter Randall Wallace.
