Melaka State Assembly dissolved to trigger 16th state election

The Melaka State Legislative Assembly was officially dissolved on September 23, 2026, paving the way for the state’s 16th state election. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh announced the dissolution following the consent of the Melaka Governor, Tun Dr. Mohd. Ali Mohd. Rustam.

The dissolution occurs ahead of the assembly’s scheduled term end on December 27, 2026. Ab Rauf noted that the decision to dissolve early took into account various factors, including the potential for natural disasters like floods toward the end of the year. Following the dissolution, the state will operate under a caretaker government to ensure that public services, administration, and welfare programs continue without interruption until a new government is formed.

The Election Commission (SPR) is responsible for determining the dates for candidate nominations and polling day. Under Malaysian law, the state election must be held within 60 days of the dissolution, meaning the polls must take place by approximately November 23, 2026. In preparation for the election, the Melaka Police have identified 3,150 personnel to be deployed to ensure order, including 1,500 officers from outside the state. The police are also collaborating with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM) to monitor social media content for misinformation regarding religion, race, and the monarchy.
