Yemisi Mabry criticizes ARD broadcasting at European Athletics Championships
German shot putter Yemisi Mabry has publicly criticized ARD’s broadcasting coverage during the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. After winning a bronze medal, Mabry expressed frustration on Instagram regarding an interview conducted by moderator Claus Lufen and expert Frank Busemann.
Mabry stated that instead of receiving support or congratulations after qualifying for the final, she was confronted with statistics highlighting her previous losses compared to her competitor, Jessica Schilder. She argued that athletes are not machines and require empathy and professionalism from journalists, especially when managing the intense emotions of competition.
Sprinter Gina Lückenkemper also voiced dissatisfaction with the broadcaster's handling of the event. Mabry emphasized that athletes provide their time and emotions to the sport and expect respect and 'backwind' rather than a list of failures during high-pressure moments.
