Melania Trump defends White House design and preservation work

First Lady Melania Trump has defended her approach to White House design and preservation, describing the residence as ‘an architectural autobiography of America’ that embodies values of democracy and civic life.

Speaking at the White House Historical Association’s Presidential Sites Summit, she emphasized the importance of craftsmanship and the responsibility of maintaining historic character. She highlighted several past projects, including the construction of the White House Tennis Pavilion, the renovation of the Queens’ Bedroom and Bathroom, the restoration of the Rose Garden, and the conservation of the Zuber wall covering in the President’s Dining Room.

Her remarks come amid ongoing scrutiny regarding second-term renovations ordered by the Trump administration. These projects include the demolition of the East Wing for a ballroom and changes to the South Lawn and Rose Garden. While the First Lady focused on her own preservation-oriented work, the proposed ballroom has faced legal challenges from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, though the Supreme Court recently declined to hear the case.
