Melanie C releases new solo album ‘Sweat’ and reflects on Spice Girls history

Melanie Chisholm, known as Mel C, has released her ninth solo studio album, ‘Sweat’. The record, which draws on her early experiences in the rave scene, focuses on disco, house, and electronic pop. Alongside the album launch, she has released a new music video for the track ‘Drum Machine’, directed by Graham Cruz.

In recent reflections on her career, Chisholm also discussed the origins of the Spice Girls' iconic nicknames. She revealed that the names Scary, Baby, Posh, Ginger, and Sporty were not chosen by the band members themselves, but were instead implemented by Peter Loraine, an editor at ‘Top of the Pops Magazine’. While the group initially viewed the pseudonyms as a joke, the labels became central to their international identity upon arriving in the United States.
