Melanotan use rises among men seeking artificial tans
Medical professionals are warning against a growing trend among young men involving the use of unregulated synthetic peptides, often referred to as ‘Barbie peptides,’ to enhance physical attractiveness.
Driven by the ‘looksmaxxing’ internet subculture, individuals are using substances like Melanotan II to stimulate melanin production and achieve a darker, tanned complexion. Users, such as 22-year-old Hunter Neely, report using injectable Melanotan to maintain a bronze appearance even during winter months.
Doctors caution that these substances are not approved for cosmetic tanning in the United States. Because they are sourced from unregulated markets, there is significant risk regarding the actual composition and safety of the products being injected.
