Melasma management requires increased sun protection
With the approach of summer, individuals with melasma must increase skin protection to prevent the darkening of spots. Melasma is a condition characterized by dark patches, typically on the face, influenced by genetics, hormonal changes, and radiation exposure.
Dermatologist Vanessa Perusso notes that visible light, specifically blue light, may also contribute to pigmentation processes. Experts recommend choosing sunscreens that protect against UVA and UVB rays, and potentially visible light. Tinted sunscreens can provide additional protection against visible light depending on the pigments used. Regular reapplication is essential, especially after sweating, swimming, or towel drying.
