Melat Kiros poised to become first Gen Z woman in US Congress

Thirty‑year‑old Ethiopian‑American lawyer and Ph.D. student Melat Kiros won Colorado’s 1st Congressional District Democratic primary, defeating 15‑term incumbent Diana DeGette in a major upset. The safe‑blue Denver district makes her election to the U.S. House in November virtually certain, which would make her the first Gen Z woman ever elected to Congress and the second Gen Z member after Representative Maxwell Frost.

Kiros campaigned on progressive priorities such as universal health care, affordable child care, housing access, labor rights, and a refusal to accept corporate political‑action‑committee money. She also called for abolishing ICE and ending U.S. military aid to Israel. In her victory speech she said, “Denver voters of all ages, of all races, of all religions sent a clear message: we will not wait,” adding, “This is a movement. And we are just getting started.”

The win reflects a broader wave of younger, progressive candidates challenging long‑standing incumbents within the Democratic Party and highlights the growing political influence of the African diaspora in America.
