Melbourne Coalition proposes $1.7 billion hybrid train fleet

The Coalition has proposed a $1.7 billion plan to introduce a fleet of hybrid trains to Melbourne’s western suburbs. Opposition Leader Jess Wilson stated that these bi-mode trains, which can switch between overhead power and secondary diesel or battery sources, would provide increased capacity for commuters in Melton and Wyndham Vale.

This proposal serves as an alternative to the Labor government’s electrification program, which has faced delays. While the Coalition remains committed to eventual electrification, they argue that hybrid trains can deliver metro-quality services to the fast-growing western corridor years sooner than the current plan, which relies on station upgrades at Sunshine not expected to be completed until 2030.
