Melbourne Cup: 71 horses remain in contention after first acceptances

Following the close of first acceptances for the Melbourne Cup, 71 horses remain in contention for the 3200m race scheduled for November 3 at Flemington. The field includes 13 international contenders from countries including Ireland, England, and Japan.

Trainer Ciaron Maher holds the largest contingent with 14 horses, including Shockletz, Middle Earth, and Okita Soushi. Chris Waller follows with eight to nine contenders, such as Aeliana, Soulcombe, and Valiant King. Defending champion Half Yours remains in contention as he seeks a back-to-back victory.

Several international horses have already arrived in Australia, while others remain in quarantine awaiting shipment. Second acceptances are set to close on October 13.
