Melbourne dominates Australia's top crash hotspots
The 2026 AAMI Crash Index, based on more than 394,000 motor‑insurance claims lodged in 2025, identified Melbourne as home to nine of the nation’s ten worst road‑crash locations. Springvale Road in Glen Waverley recorded the highest number of claims, taking the top spot for the first time in eight years, while Plenty Road in Bundoora fell to second place.
The remaining Melbourne hotspots include Doncaster Road, Maroondah Highway, Sydney Road (Campbellfield), Bell Street, Cooper Street, Nepean Highway, Pennant Hills Road and Stud Road. Across the country, other capital cities’ worst sites were Mains Road in Sunnybank (Brisbane), Albany Highway in Cannington (Perth), North East Road in Modbury (Adelaide), Sandy Bay Road (Hobart), Hindmarsh Drive (Canberra) and Trower Road (Darwin).
Nose‑to‑tail collisions were the most common crash type, accounting for 28 % of all incidents, with failure to give way and vehicle‑to‑static‑object collisions also significant. The data highlights the concentration of high‑risk traffic environments in Melbourne and the prevalence of rear‑end crashes nationwide.
