Melbourne experiences heavy flash flooding after record rainfall
Melbourne has experienced its wettest day in over two years following a massive torrential downpour. The Bureau of Meteorology reported that the Melbourne Olympic Park gauge recorded 47.8 millimetres of rain on Thursday, with much of that falling within a single hour. Total rainfall for the period is expected to reach 100mm in some parts of Victoria.
The heavy rainfall triggered flash flooding and emergency rescues. Police rescued a family of four and another individual from two vehicles trapped under the York Street bridge in South Melbourne. In Elwood, emergency crews were called to a canal where a truck and van became stuck in floodwaters.
The Victorian State Emergency Service (SES) responded to approximately 200 calls for assistance between Thursday midday and Friday morning. These calls included 71 reports of building damage, 52 related to flooding, and 45 involving fallen trees. Heavy rain and flood warnings are expected to continue through the weekend.
