Melbourne guide dog dragged by train after leash caught in doors

A guide dog named Dottie was briefly dragged by a train at Melbourne’s Flinders Street Station after its leash became caught in closing doors. The incident occurred while Lucy Carpenter, a visually impaired woman and employee of Guide Dogs Victoria, was boarding the train.

Passengers attempted to alert the driver via intercoms, but the train proceeded to the next station. A bystander on the platform managed to pull the leash free, preventing a more severe injury. Dottie sustained only minor injuries to its toenails, though the incident has caused significant psychological trauma for Carpenter.

Metro Trains Melbourne issued an apology, stating that the door sensors failed to detect the leash because it was too thin to trigger the mechanism. However, Carpenter expressed dissatisfaction with the operator, claiming they attempted to shift blame onto passengers and have not contacted her directly. Advocacy groups, including Guide Dogs Victoria and the Public Transport Users Association, have called for improved driver training and upgrades to door sensors and monitoring systems to ensure the safety of passengers with disabilities.
