Melbourne High School to use portable classrooms for safety works

Melbourne High School is preparing for major building works due to safety concerns, which may result in up to half of its classes moving to 30 portable classrooms in 2027. The decision follows an Education Department report that identified extreme risks associated with defunct electrical and fire systems in the school's main buildings.

The Victorian State Building Authority has committed to remediation work in two primary structures. While fire and electrical upgrades in the N-building are scheduled to begin later this year without disrupting classes, a full refurbishment of the historic Gothic-style T-building remains unconfirmed.

To make space for the necessary demountable classrooms, the school has opted not to renew its 30-year contract with the Melbourne Cricket Club’s hockey division for 2026. This move has been described as unexpected by MCC Hockey chair Alison Foenander, noting the long-standing connection between the club and the school.
