Melbourne hiker missing in remote Peru mountains
A search is underway in the remote Huayhuash mountain range in Peru for Jordan Yap, a 30-year-old hiker from Melbourne, Australia. Yap embarked on a solo high-altitude trek on September 14, intending to be off the grid for 10 days.
Concerns grew after Yap failed to check in at his hotel and missed a scheduled flight. While other hikers reported seeing him on the third day of his journey, he has not been heard from since. The Huayhuash circuit is noted for its steep and rugged terrain, making it one of Peru’s most difficult mountain routes.
After difficulties contacting Peruvian authorities, Yap’s family hired the local mountain rescue organization, Socorro Andino Peruano, which deployed a team to search the area. Yap is described by his family as an experienced traveler and avid outdoorsman.
