Melbourne Market Authority board resigns following new chair appointment
The board of the Melbourne Market Authority (MMA) has resigned following the Victorian government's appointment of Paul Guerra as the new chair. The resignations include acting chair Angie Bradbury, who had held the position since May, as well as board members Margaret Burdeu and Emma Germano, a former president of the Victorian Farmers Federation.
Acting chair Angie Bradbury stated she resigned after being passed over for the permanent three-year role and expressed disappointment regarding the lack of reasoning provided by the government for the decision. While Bradbury noted her objection was to the decision itself rather than Mr. Guerra personally, the mass departure includes acting chief executive Keith Louie, who has provided one month's notice.
Prior to the announcement, board members had reportedly warned Agriculture Minister Michaela Settle that they would resign if Ms. Bradbury was not appointed, citing concerns regarding statutory accountability. The government defended the appointment of Mr. Guerra, citing his extensive commercial and governance experience, including previous roles with the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria and the Queen Victoria Market company.
Resignations for the board members are set to take effect on October 29, while Mr. Guerra is scheduled to begin his term as chair on Friday.
