Melbourne performing arts sector seeks resilience through new venues and local programming

The performing arts industry in Melbourne is navigating a challenging period marked by funding cuts, rising production costs, and a cost-of-living crisis. Despite these pressures, industry leaders suggest that a demand for communal, live experiences remains a driving force for the sector.

To support local artists and provide new performance opportunities, the Peter and Ruth McMullin Beacon is opening at the Melbourne Recital Centre. The venue, located in a former storage space, was created through a $1 million donation from philanthropists Peter and Ruth McMullin, which was matched by $1 million from the Victorian government.

The new intimate space aims to provide a lifeline for cabaret, jazz, and musical theatre performers following the closure of several small music venues in the city. The Beacon is scheduled to host its first public performances on September 17, featuring international cabaret performer Meow Meow.
