Melbourne urban expansion plans approved for Melton East and Merrifield North

The Victorian Government has announced major urban development plans for Melbourne’s growth corridors, focusing on the new Melton East and Merrifield North precincts.

In Melbourne’s west, Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny has approved the Melton East Precinct Structure Plan. This development is expected to deliver 12,000 new homes, seven schools, and extensive parklands, eventually supporting over 36,000 residents and approximately 1,600 jobs. The project will be implemented in two stages over the next 20 to 30 years and includes significant infrastructure such as arterial roads, bridges, and community hubs.

In the northern growth corridor, preliminary plans for the Merrifield North precinct have been revealed. This 970-hectare employment precinct, located near the intersection of Mickleham and Beveridge, is designed to accommodate more than 4,700 jobs. The development will feature extensive active transport networks, including cycling corridors and pedestrian links, to connect residents to employment hubs.
