Melek Karahan released from custody in Mardin

Melek Karahan, known publicly as the ‘Mardin Marilyn Monroe’, has been released from custody following a court hearing in Mardin. Karahan was originally arrested on charges of ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’ regarding the July 15, 2016, coup attempt.

During the hearing, which she attended via video link (SEGBİS), Karahan expressed regret for her social media posts. She stated that she had shared a post from a member of parliament without proper scrutiny and emphasized that she had no intention of causing public confusion.

Although the prosecution requested punishment under Articles 217/A and 218 of the Turkish Penal Code, the Mardin 3rd Criminal Court of First Instance ordered her release pending trial. The court has adjourned the proceedings until October 6, at which time her legal counsel will present a defense against the prosecution's memorandum.
