Melicuccà preserves Byzantine history and literary legacy

Melicuccà, a village located on the northern slopes of the Aspromonte in the province of Reggio Calabria, holds significant cultural and literary importance. The town is the birthplace and final home of Lorenzo Calogero (1910–1961), a poet recognized as a notable figure in 20th-century Italian literature. Although Calogero remained largely outside mainstream literary circles during his life, his work gained recognition posthumously, earning praise from intellectuals such as Giuseppe Ungaretti.

The village itself possesses deep historical roots, with origins dating back to approximately the 10th century and influences from Byzantine culture. Notable archaeological sites in the area include the Sant’Elia Speleota caves, which contain remains of an ancient Basilian cenobium, a necropolis, and various monastic structures.
