Melih Gökçek under investigation for alleged overseas money transfers

The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an ex officio investigation into former Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Melih Gökçek and his family regarding allegations of unregistered money transfers to overseas companies. The probe follows claims by journalist Murat Ağırel that the Gökçek family utilized a company named HAMAG GmbH to conduct multi-million euro real estate investments in Germany.

In addition to the financial allegations, the investigation includes a review of municipal tenders. The prosecutor's office has requested comprehensive documentation from the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality regarding all tenders involving 36 specific companies, some of which operated during Gökçek's tenure. The Ankara Metropolitan Municipality has already begun compiling these records for the Financial Crimes Branch of the Ankara Police Department.

Melih Gökçek appeared at the Ankara Courthouse as a suspect, providing a statement that lasted approximately two hours. Following his testimony, Gökçek defended himself by noting he has faced hundreds of investigations throughout his career without conviction. He emphasized the confidentiality of the legal process and stated he would provide more detailed comments once the investigation concludes. The investigation has expanded to include Gökçek's son, Ahmet Gökçek, and his daughter-in-law, Hülya Gökçek, who are also summoned to provide statements.
