Melikgazi Medresesi excavation begins in Kayseri

Archaeological excavations are underway in Kayseri, Turkey, to uncover the Melikgazi Medresesi, which is believed to be the first madrasa in Anatolia. The project is being conducted under the supervision of the Kayseri Museum Directorate and sponsored by the Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality.

The excavation is located within the Cumhuriyet neighborhood, an area designated as a risky zone by presidential decree. Work is being carried out on the qibla facade of the Cami-i Kebir. Approximately 30 percent of the site has been uncovered so far, revealing the walls of the structure.

Historical records suggest the building was constructed by Melik Muhammed Gazi, the fourth sultan of the Danişmentids. The Danişmentids were a significant dynasty in the region following the events of 1071. Once the excavation is complete, experts will evaluate the findings to determine future restoration or preservation plans.
