Melilla inaugurates monument honoring 1921 relief troops
A new monument has been inaugurated in Melilla to honor the soldiers who arrived to aid the city following the 1921 Disaster of Annual. Located near the Plaza de España and the Government Delegation, the sculptural ensemble serves as a tribute to the military units that provided relief during a period of extreme uncertainty.
The unveiling ceremony was led by the General Commander of Melilla, Luis Cortés Delgado, alongside colonels from the Legion and the Regulares units. Local officials, including President Juan José Imbroda and Counselor of Culture Fadela Mohatar, emphasized the historical importance of the ‘Socorro a Melilla’ (Relief to Melilla), noting that the arrival of troops on July 24, 1921, provided essential hope and morale to the local population.
The artwork was created by sculptor Jesús García Ligero. The project follows a proposal made during the centenary of the event to ensure the sacrifices and heroism of those who defended the city are formally recognized.
