Melissa Barrera discusses professional fallout over Gaza advocacy

Actress Melissa Barrera has spoken out regarding the professional consequences she faced following her social media advocacy for Palestinians during the Israel-Hamas war. In November 2023, Barrera was removed from her role in the 'Scream' franchise by Spyglass Media Group and was subsequently dropped by her talent agency, WME.

Barrera characterized her social media posts as criticisms of the Israeli government's actions in Gaza—which she described as genocide and ethnic cleansing—rather than antisemitic remarks. She noted that the period following her dismissal was isolating and resulted in a roughly ten-month career drought, stating, “It’s hard to comprehend, but it’s also not the first time that that has happened to someone, and it won’t be the last.”

While Spyglass Media Group previously defended its decision by stating it had "zero tolerance for antisemitism or incitement of hate in any form," Barrera maintains she has no regrets. She suggested the industry fallout was part of a broader effort to silence criticism regarding human rights. Barrera, who has since begun working again in theater and new film projects, expressed optimism that public opinion on these issues is shifting.
