Costa Coffee warns of rising prices due to climate change
Costa Coffee has warned of rising coffee prices driven by climate change and supply chain instability. Despite the company returning to profitability following store modernizations, executives note that coffee bean costs remain persistently high.
Global market volatility is being fueled by extreme weather events like El Niño. Brazil, the world's largest producer, has faced severe droughts, causing Arabica bean stocks to drop to their lowest levels in 26 years. Additionally, an earthquake in Colombia disrupted port operations and export routes, further tightening supply.
In the United Kingdom and Ireland, where Costa operates approximately 2,800 locations, the cost of a regular latte has risen to £4.40, up from £2.90 five years ago. Leadership warns that global warming may simultaneously impact both the quality and quantity of available coffee crops.
