Melmalayanur Angalamman Temple celebrates Unjal festival

The Unjal festival was celebrated with great fervor at the Melmalayanur Angalamman Temple in the Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu on the occasion of Adi Amavasai. The event drew millions of devotees from various districts of Tamil Nadu, as well as from the neighboring states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

During the celebrations, special rituals including abhishekam and maha aradhana were performed for the main deity, Angalamman, starting at approximately 4:00 AM. The deity was adorned with gold armor, known as Thanga Kavsam. The main Unjal festival program took place late at night, with the deity appearing in a special form in the swing pavilion at around 11:00 PM.

N. Anand, the State Minister for Rural Development and Water Resources, attended the festivities and participated in swinging the deity's cradle. To accommodate the large crowds, special bus services were operated from various cities. The event was organized by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department and the temple trustee committee.
