Melon and watermelon storage best practices
Proper storage techniques for melons and watermelons vary depending on whether the fruit is whole or cut. Cut watermelon stored in a refrigerator typically remains good for 3 to 5 days. Whole, uncut watermelons can last approximately 7 to 10 days at room temperature, or up to 2 to 3 weeks when refrigerated to slow ripening and bacterial growth.
For general melon storage, the Interprofessional Melon Association suggests that unripe melons are best kept in a cool, dark cupboard or cellar away from heat and light, where they can ripen slowly for 5 to 6 days. While ripe melons can be refrigerated in a vegetable drawer wrapped in plastic to prevent odors from affecting other foods, doing so may impact flavor. For watermelon specifically, refrigeration is recommended after purchase to maintain optimal freshness.
