Oma Rosie’s Heat‑Stress Remedies for Chickens
Oma Rosie’s traditional methods help backyard chickens cope with summer heat. She watches for signs such as heavy panting, drooping wings, bluish combs, loss of appetite, excessive thirst, diarrhea, reduced egg production and thin shells. When these appear, she provides shaded, cool drinking stations and replaces water several times a day, often adding a frozen bottle to keep it chilled.
She also offers high‑water content snacks. Watermelon, which is over 90 % water and rich in lycopene, is her favourite cooling treat, along with chilled cucumber, berries or zucchini. For extreme heat she freezes small fruit pieces into ice cubes for the birds to peck at. Feed is adjusted to the lower appetite of chickens in hot weather.
These low‑tech, inexpensive measures aim to prevent heat‑stroke and maintain flock health during hot spells.
