Giorgia Meloni sets record for longest-serving Italian Prime Minister

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has set a new record for political longevity, becoming the longest-serving head of government in the history of the Italian Republic. Having held office for 1,413 days since October 2022, she has surpassed the previous record held by Silvio Berlusconi.

Meloni’s administration is characterized by a shift toward pragmatism, which has helped stabilize public accounts and reduce the spread between German and Italian interest rates. Supporters point to economic indicators such as increased employment and tax cuts as evidence of success. However, critics and opposition leaders argue that these gains have not translated into improved purchasing power for families, who continue to struggle with inflation and high costs of living.

At a recent business forum in Cernobbio, a survey of entrepreneurs showed a positive outlook for the Meloni government, with 68.3% of respondents giving the executive a favorable rating. In contrast, 83% of the same group expressed negative views toward the political opposition. As Meloni prepares for the 2027 elections, her government continues to navigate challenges regarding economic growth, social services, and international relations, including strengthened ties with Turkey.
