Melrose Industries flags £25‑£30m cost from California plant incident, suspends buyback

Melrose Industries, owner of GKN Aerospace, reported that an overheating chemical tank at the company's Garden Grove, California facility triggered an emergency response and a temporary evacuation in May. The incident is expected to generate additional costs of between £25 million and £30 million in the second half of 2026. Melrose has paused its £175 million share‑buyback programme while it assesses the full financial impact.

For the six months to June, Melrose posted an adjusted pretax profit of £282 million, an 18% increase year‑on‑year, and revenue rose 10% to £1.87 billion. The Garden Grove issue reduced first‑half revenue by £16 million and adjusted operating profit by £9 million. Partial production at the site has resumed, and CEO Peter Dilnot said the company will work with customers, regulators and other authorities to restore full production in the second half of the year. Melrose reiterated its outlook for the full year.
