Memba District faces moderate drought risk due to El Niño

The Memba District in Mozambique's Nampula Province is facing a potential moderate drought due to the El Niño phenomenon. Forecasts from the National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) indicate a significant rainfall deficit expected to last from October 2023 through May 2027.

In response, the Technical Council for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (CTGRD) has activated Anticipatory Action Plans (PAA) to mitigate impacts on local populations and livelihoods. The National Emergency Operations Center of the Institute for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction (INGD) has recommended several urgent measures, including the distribution of drought-resistant seeds and crops adapted to low precipitation.

Additional strategies include the rehabilitation and maintenance of water supply systems and boreholes for human consumption, as well as measures to protect livestock by ensuring access to water and pasture. Authorities are also calling for intensified awareness campaigns regarding sustainable water use and the promotion of conservation agriculture.
