Memorial events held in Thuringia to honor victims of violence

Various memorial events took place in Thuringia, Germany, to honor victims of femicide and right-wing violence.

In Weimar, approximately 60 people gathered at Frauenplan to commemorate women killed by partners or ex-partners. The event, organized by the Thuringia-wide Network Against Femicide, addressed the lack of a specific legal definition for femicide in Germany. The gathering was part of a decentralized series of commemorations held in Arnstadt, Ilmenau, Weimar, and Jena, following recent killings in Bad Berka, Zöllnitz, and Greiz.

In Erfurt, the second annual memorial day for victims of right-wing violence was held at the Andreasstraße memorial and educational center. Under the theme ‘Who belongs to public space?’, the event featured discussions on right-wing spatial occupation, exhibitions, and speeches. Katharina König-Preuss of Die Linke emphasized the importance of the day in combating forgetting and called for official state recognition of victims of right-wing violence, including Heinz Mädel, Ireneusz Szyderski, and Hartmut Balzke.
